Learning the Importance of Going Green– A Sustainability Project @ Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse

What is Sustainability and Why is it important?

More often than not, we tend to see and hear the word ‘Sustainability’ being mentioned every now and then. It is a word that holds significant importance.

Sustainability refers to the ability to meet our own needs without compromising the natural resources for future generations in order to keep an ecological balance.

With that said, it is important that all of us do our part in contributing to environmental sustainability - to preserve energy and natural resources in the long run rather than exhausting them for short-term needs. Environmental sustainability is essential as it holds a direct impact on the usage of energy, food and man-made resources we consume every day.

We should all make a conscious effort to protect Mother Earth and this development should occur without destroying the environment while moving towards sustainable living.

Babilou Family, the parent company of Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse, has pledged our commitment to do all we can to conserve the environment for the benefit of children. This was done through related activities and lessons conducted across all centres and brands, as we educate our young ones on the concept and importance of sustainability and environmental conservation.

Let’s take a look at how children from Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse played their part in building a better world through their participation in Plan(t) the Future, a sustainability initiative organised in conjunction with National Parks Board (Nparks).

Plan(t) the Future – for a Better Tomorrow

To commemorate Earth Day, a fundraising event was organised as the first sustainability initiative for the year with proceeds going towards NPark’s Garden City Fund through their Plant-A-Tree programme

Teachers and children from all Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse centres brainstormed ideas for activities to conduct with the children to raise funds. Teachers first engaged the children with storytelling and discussion sessions on the topic of sustainability to instill the importance of protecting the Earth.

Then, children from different class levels (Playgroup to Kindergarten 2) worked collaboratively on creating handmade crafts and items which were then put up for sale to our families, all for a good cause.

Parents get to join in the fun too!

Over at Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse @ Harboufront, parents were invited to bring their child/children for a 1km nature walk-a-thon. We are so glad to see our children and their parents enjoying themselves outdoors.

As part of the Earth Day celebration in the centre, children made use of recycled materials to create handmade crafts. With the assistance of our teachers, they turned the centre into a mini gallery for parents to view and admire their wonderful creations. Look how amazing the set-up is!

The young ones from Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse @ Newton also showcased their creativity by making their very own recyclable bags for sale. Did you know that using recyclable bags will help to protect the wildlife and environment, and have the potential to save over ten million barrels of oil?

Seeing all the vibrant colours and designs our children have added to the recycle bags certainly made our teachers and parents smile. We could not be prouder of our children for playing a part in this meaningful initiative – now parents can take these recyclable bags with them on their grocery shopping runs.

Through our Plan(t) the Future sustainability project, a total of $50,045 was raised across all centres and brands under Babilou Family Singapore which translates to 166 trees being planted at a designated park location. We would once again like to thank all centres, educators and parents for making this project possible. As a big family, we can all look forward to a sustainable future together!
